FIGHTING THE FREE-RADICAL FOE POWER UP WITH VITAMINS: PYCNOGENOL - THE NEW KID ON THE ANTIOXIDANT BLOCK
Ten-to-one you've not heard of Pycnogenol (pronounced "pick-nah-gen-nol"), since it's only recently been introduced to North America. A natural substance derived from pine tree bark, you'll be hearing more about it in the years to come, since its antioxidant activity has been found to be 50 times stronger than Vitamin E, 20 times stronger than Vitamin C and it's known world-wide as an anti-aging product.
Developed in France where research has gone on for more than twenty years, double-blind tests have documented its ability to raise capillary resistance. This makes pycnogenol important in the prevention and reversal of such ailments as varicose veins, diabetic retinopathy, peripheral hemorrhage, high blood pressure and heart disease.
Dr. Jack Masquelier of the University of Bordeaux in France, the researcher who first developed the pine bark extraction process, has had his findings regarding the antioxidant free radical fighting effects of proanthocyanidin (the primary biologically active ingredient of Pycnogenol) corroborated throughout the world in laboratories and clinical trials.
Dr. P. P. Rothschild, a 1986 Nobel Prize nominee and pioneer Pycnogenol researcher, explains its value. "It's the only antioxidant that can cross the blood barrier of the brain, providing extra protection from free radical damage throughout the nervous system."
Pharmacologically, Pycnogenol has a molecular structure similar to compounds found in the family of flavanoids, known to be powerful antioxidant agents. At the cellular level, the substance works to bind collagen and elastin fibers, and has been extremely effective in reversing and preventing capillary fragility.
Few U.S. physicians, to date, have sufficient experience with Pycnogenol to comment. One notable exception is Dr. Ronald Hoffman, of New York City, a well known chelation and nutrition specialist who told us he considers this substance a "breakthrough" treatment.
